Conspectus On Perception.

For ~N.~S.~

I originally wanted to call this concept an ‘anarchist phenomenology’, but I now want to modify the name. The reason why is because I am convinced this particular take on human experience should be one that anyone could agree with.

The cause for the initial name was framed around the idea that human moral problems are to be solved politically, and only politically. It is a pragmatic conception of human experience of the world. The world is to be approached as something to be used for some purpose.

The concept of pragmatism I am drawing on here is not one of Machiavellian compromise in the political arena. Pragmatism is a philosophy of human perception. Perhaps quite Anglo-American, but it has its merits. It is associated with names such as Charles Sanders Pierce, William James, and John Dewey.

I daresay I think these three chaps are onto something. This philosophy of experience is a fundamentally voluntaristic one—some have labelled it an ‘instrumentalist’ conception, but I think it is more nuanced than that. The idea behind pragmatism—so it seems to me anyway—is that we create the reality we want to see.

And so, if one were to translate this epistemology into the political arena, I believe it allows one to be a Utopian about social arrangements. There need not be wars, starvation, or exploitation. As far as I am concerned, this is how it is.
